Let’s Just Have Some Fun

Sep 29, 2026

I turned 60 this month, and I’ve been thinking: when did midlife become code for “sit down, be sensible, and discuss your sore knees”? I’ve raised kids, bought the T-shirt, bought the stuff, learned a few things the hard way, and somehow lost every pair of glasses (and some airpods) I own. I’m wiser, sure, but I’m also still curious, still growing, and want new experiences and joy! I don’t want to spend this chapter acting as though the fun part of life has already happened. Where is that written? And who put that person in charge?

Life can be heavy. I know that as well as anyone. There are bills and family worries and people who can turn on you in a minute. But if we wait until everything is sorted before we enjoy the day – THIS day, we may be waiting forever. Our days aren’t unlimited, which is a slightly alarming thing to say in a blog about fun, but there it is. Call the friend. Go to the concert. Take the trip if you can. Do the thing you keep saying you’ll do “one day.” Tuesday is a day – do it now.

And while we’re at it, let’s stop checking whether everyone approves. The ex who wanted you small? They don’t get a vote. The friends who were comfortable with the old you but they don’t “get” the person you are today? You can care about them without handing them the steering wheel. Find the people who laugh with you, cheer you on, and will pick up the phone when life gets weird. Be that person for someone else, too. Check on your neighbour. Invite someone who’s been having a rough time. Be kind to the person making your coffee. Having fun doesn’t mean forgetting other people; so much of the good stuff happens when we connect.

A friend brought up the word whimsical this week, and I love it. It makes me picture a tiny glittery munchkin sprinkling fairy dust all over, but maybe that’s exactly the point. We need a little more unnecessary joy. Put flowers on the table for no reason. Make pancakes for dinner. Take a different route on your walk. Say hello to the dog as if he’s the Buddha. Spend some quality time with your higher self, source, the light, or whatever you call that part of you that knows there is more to life than your checklist.   This week, pick one thing that will make you smile and share it with someone. We’ve earned some wisdom; now let’s actually use it to live. Let’s be kind, be a little silly, catch the joy when it shows up, and have some damn fun.
