Shattering Beliefs & Making Hard Things Easy
Sep 02, 2025Let me tell you, nothing tests your inner power quite like signing up for something that makes you wonder if you’ve lost your mind. For me it’s a cycling race that’s longer than anything I’ve ever done. At the time of registration, I was feeling bold, unstoppable, fuelled by visions of myself crushing the climbs, and crossing the finish line like a Tour de France champion. Now, with the race breathing down my neck, my brain is inventing every excuse in the book: What if it rains? What if I bonk? What if I croak on the biggest climb? What if I get passed by an 80-year-old on an e-bike?
But here’s the truth: the hardest part isn’t the miles—it’s the mind games. Our brains are wired to self-sabotage the closer we get to something extraordinary. It’s like some weird protective mechanism saying, “Hey, let’s stay safe in our cozy bubble of mediocrity where Netflix marathons are the only endurance events.” The trick is to notice when the self-doubt soundtrack starts playing on repeat—and then change the channel. Shattering those limiting beliefs doesn’t mean the fear disappears; it means you show up anyway - wobbling, sweating, and possibly swearing, but still moving forward. It means telling yourself over and over that being outside your comfort zone is the best part of life – where the greatest memories and experiences live.
And here’s the best part: when you commit to doing the hard thing, it stops being so hard. The nerves you feel? That’s just energy waiting to be redirected into action. The finish line you’re worried about? That’s already waiting for you. Every pedal stroke, every deep breath, every time you’ve chosen to train instead of quit—you’ve already made the hard thing easier. You’re not just racing; you’re rewriting the story of who you are and what you’re capable of. You’re becoming the best version of you!
So here’s my invitation: don’t jump out, lean in. Whatever your wild goal is—running the 10K, writing the book, starting over in life—do the thing. Because nothing feels better than looking back and realizing that what once felt impossible became your victory lap.
Practice Tips to Make the Hard Easy:
- Mantra it up: Create a phrase that snaps you back into power when fear creeps in. Mine is: “I do hard things with ease.” and my ultimate favourite “I am, I can, I will.” Repeat it until your brain believes you.
- Visualize the win: Close your eyes, visualize the course and breezing past others and see yourself already crossing that finish line, sweaty, grinning, arms raised like a champion. Feel it in your body.
- Micro-steps: When nerves hit, don’t think about the entire distance. Just focus on the next 10 minutes, the next mile, or the next pedal stroke. Small wins stack up quickly.
