Snowstorms, Excuses, and Self-Trust: Winning the Battle in Your Head

Apr 07, 2026

This morning, Calgary decided to remind me who’s boss. Wind howling, snow sideways, the kind of weather that makes your coffee taste like a life line. I stood there in my kitchen, staring out the window like a drama queen, and thought, “Absolutely not. Today is cancelled.” And just like that, my very reasonable, very organized to-do list quietly packed its bags and turned into a to-don’t list. Don’t go outside. Don’t try. Don’t bother. Don’t be uncomfortable.

But here’s the thing, I had to gently (okay, aggressively) remind myself: the weather is not the problem. The endless group chats or breaking news alerts... also not the problem. The real issue is how quickly we hand over our focus—and with it, our self-trust. Every time we say, “I’ll do it later,” what we’re quietly saying is, “I don’t believe I’ll show up for myself right now.” And that, my friends, is how a meaningful life slowly turns into a long list of almosts.

I spent a solid hour (or more) negotiating with myself this morning. You know the kind—“I’ll just sit for five more minutes,” “Maybe I’ll start after lunch,” But eventually, I remembered something important: self-worth isn’t built in grand gestures. It’s built in tiny, almost boring acts of keeping promises to yourself. It’s putting on your boots when you don’t feel like it. It’s going into my office. It’s doing the thing when literally everything—including your inner drama queen—is telling you not to.

This is where the magic of the to-don’t list actually works in our favor. Instead of letting it be a list of avoidance, flip it. Don’t quit on yourself. Don’t wait for perfect conditions. Don’t outsource your motivation to sunshine, silence, or a world that finally behaves. Because guess what? It won’t. Life is noisy. It’s messy. It’s occasionally covered in inconceivable snow. But your ability to take one small action anyway? That’s where your power lives.

If you need a little backup on this (because we all do), go watch Mel Robbins’ TED Talk, “How to Stop Screwing Yourself Over.” It’s a classic, no-nonsense reminder that motivation is wildly overrated and action is everything. Or queue up her podcast for a dose of “get out of your own way” energy. Because at the end of the day, the goal isn’t to win against the weather or the chaos—it’s to win back your own trust. One small, stubborn, slightly reluctant step at a time.
