You Are Not Your Job (But You Might Be a Bit Hangry Right Now)

career gratitude health/wellness relationships transformation Aug 11, 2025

I used to be someone. You know, kind of important. Business card with a title so long it needed two lines. Meetings. PowerPoints. Airport yogurt parfaits at 5 a.m. Dinners with colleagues – steak and wine. I was doing so much — leading teams, launching strategies, putting out fires with a coffee in one hand and a cell phone surgically attached to the other. But here's the truth I didn’t want to admit until my clothes stopped fitting, my family didn’t count on me, and I burst into tears over not being able to climb the stairs: I was my job. And when I finally wasn't doing it anymore… I didn’t know who the hell I was.

Wayne Dyer said it best: "If you are what you do, then when you don't… you aren't." Mic drop, Wayne.

So what do we do when we want to create our new identity. One WE create – not society, not our parents, or friends or people we think actually care. When we realize our LinkedIn summary is not our soul's purpose? We swerve. We step away from the illusion that our value is tied to our productivity. And yes, it's terrifying. But it's also where the magic happens.

Here’s a little Lifeswerve activity I highly recommend this week:

The “I Am” Mirror Game

Stand in front of a mirror (preferably before coffee, when your ego is still half asleep). Look into your own eyes and say:

"I am not my job. I am not my to-do list. I am not my email inbox. I am a whole human with value, even when I’m wearing yoga pants and haven’t answered a single slack/TEAMS/text message all day."

Then? List 5 things you are that have nothing to do with doing:

“I am funny.”
“I am kind.”
“I am a killer singer in my car.”
“I am a dog whisperer.”
“I am learning to love being still.”

Let yourself feel the shift. Your worth? Not up for debate.

Want to go deeper?

Listen to this gem: The Power of Vulnerability by Brené Brown (TED Talk) — because letting go of what we do to embrace who we are takes a little courage, a little laughter, and probably many walks in nature.

So here’s to you—not your resume, not your LinkedIn profile, not your achievements, not your colour-coded calendar. Just you, being wildly worthy simply for existing. Now go remind someone else they are too.
